Otto Loth was born on 6 March 1844 in Meissen as the son of the Royal Saxon Court Councilor. Loth and his wife Ottilie Loth (nee Karg) born. From 1857 he attended the prince's school Sankt Afra (today Saxon State High School Sankt Afra) in Meissen. From 1863 to 1866 he came to the University of Leipzig to study Oriental philology. There he joined the Leipzig fraternity Dresdensia. In Leipzig, he was considered a student of Professor Heinrich Leberecht Fleischer and Ludolf Krehl. On May 8, 1866 he received his doctorate in Leipzig on the basis of the dissertation "On Life and Works of the 'Abdallah ibn el Mu'tazz".
